Sports & nature

Sports & natureMountain biking in Hoedspruit has caught a lot of attention over the last couple of years, with tracks that can really test your skill as a cyclist or even for those who want to take it easy and enjoy a nice slow day.  The beautiful escarpment of the Lowveld can really take your breath away. You can also ride alongside a number of plains game, such as impala, giraffe and many more, but don’t forget about the bird life.  Be sure to keep an eye out for the reptiles, snakes do love a good bask in the sun. For the avid mountain biker, the route up to Mariepskop can be rather challenging, however the view you will experience is absolutely spectacular. From here downhill is something to look forward to. Remember to take enough water, as it can get very hot in the Lowveld. It is essential to pack a repair kit, the road less travelled might surprise you with a few nasty thorns and rocks and could spoil your ride. Hoedspruit is perfect to cycle all year round, however in the summer months the temperature can reach up to 40degrees Celsius.  Always remember to apply enough sunblock. Some tracks are more suitable for the beginner or the relaxed rider.  It is a great way to brush up on your bird knowledge and experiencing nature up close and personal.  The Fauna and Flora that Hoedspruit has got to offer will make you feel fresh and revived. The most important thing to remember is to have fun, relax and enjoy what this natural beauty has got to offer.

Culture and history info

Culture and history infoJust 25 km from Hoedspruit, a visit to the Kruger National Park area is incomplete without a visit to Nyani Village & the Cultural Experience “Roots of Rhythm” Tribal show. In an informative and entertaining way, Roots of Rhythm performers provide visitors with a better understanding of the rich cultural background of the Limpopo Tribes, identifying the history and traditions of the indigenous people through costumes, dance styles and rhythms. The name Hoedspruit itself was given by Dawid Johannes Joubert and was directly as a result of an incident after a major cloud burst on Mariepskop area in 1844 (when he first arrived in the area) which caused the “now called Zandspruit” to come down in a flash flood.  During this even he ended up loosing his hat in the flooding river.   Bearing in mind that a hat in those days was a valuable resource for a farmer (sun protection etc) and not something that could be easily replaced as there were not “hat shops” on every corner, this in itself was a major event for Dawid Joubert and as a result, he then named the river the Hoedspruit (the Hat River) – as in the River that stole his Hat.
